Savour the West Coast slowly
The Charlies Brew House Experience.
To truly experience the West Coast, you need to taste it. We are not talking about a quick slurp of a Saldanha oyster while you watch the clock because you are on a time trial. The tastes of the West Coast are savoured slowly and enhanced by the ocean air, endless views and relaxed atmosphere.
The latest West Coast hotspot is called Charlies Beer House, but it is so much more than what the name implies.
Location is almost everything.
The building itself is worthy of a mention. Situated on the Marina with fabulous views over the water, the building was very cleverly designed to accommodate the scenery and to cater to all weather conditions. The main room is spacious but has a cozy feel to it. Rough red bricks, wooden beams and gleaming copper beer taps create a warm and welcoming environment. Three steps lead to a deck enclosed in glass and steel filled with long wooden tables making a wonderful a light and airy space.
Fresh air fanatics can sit outside the main area under the awnings just a few steps away from the water.
The microbrewery is situated at the back of the main area and will soon be producing and selling Charlies Beer House American Pale Ale, Lager, Bourbon Stout and Blonde Ale. For now, you can enjoy local wines and the beers from Africa’s first carbon neutral brewery, Darling Brew.
A gin distillery is also on the cards at Charlies, but for now they are serving the extremely delicious Poetic Licence Gin from a small independent distillery in England.
Eat, drink and be merry.
Lunch and dinner are served seven days a week and the food is truly outstanding. Think of traditional British pub food with a creative West Coast twist.
Snacks and starters include tantalizing menu items like West Coast mussels in ale and coconut sauce, beer prawns, chilled line fish ceviche, beef tartare and smoked hake & avocado bruschetta.
Main meals to accompany your beer feature dishes like honey mustard glazed eisbein, a pulled pork sandwich, home-made sausages served with creamy mashed potatoes, beer battered fish and chips and steamed beef and ale pudding with cauliflower puree. Salads and a children’s menu are also available.
Local is lekker
The locals are loving Charlie’s, and while great food and excellent beer are always a drawcard, places are all about people. From the staff who are passionate about what they do to the patrons who love the area and have made this pub their home from home. Charlie’s is like an informal Info Office for out of towners. Looking for the best fishing spot, secluded B n B or alternate back route, someone in Charlie’s will have advice, stories and more.
Friday nights are live music parties, and major sporting events will be shown on the big screen TV.
West Coast sunsets are rather special and even better when experienced with something cold in your hand. Charlie’s is perfectly located for sundowners.
